2016 NHL Trade Deadline

An Illustrated look at the 2016 NHL Trade Deadline

The NHL 2016 Trade deadline day was this past Monday. And despite the fact that is was leap day, all the trades still count. Well, I’m pretty sure anyway, the CBA is confusing.

The infographic shows you which teams and which GMs traded with each other this season. The GM information is based on an infographic from last season, please see the bottom of this post for more info. The thicker the line between teams, the more pieces (players, draft picks and future considerations) involved.

If you look at the 2014 and 2015 versions of this infographic, you can see some similarities. Mainly, more trades are out of conference (the we really don’t want to see that guy again). This is followed by trades to the opposite division in a conference (we’re ok seeing you every once and while). Finally we have trades happening within the division (we’re totally cool seeing you all the time, also know as the “we’re over it” trade).

To break down the numbers a little further, we had:

52 Players, draft picks and future considerations total traded
19 Trades (down from 22 in 2015)
8 out of conference trades
6 Western conference only trades
4 Eastern conference only trades
1 divisional trade (Pacific)
The Ducks and Coyotes made the most trades with 4 each

2016 Breakdowns

It all boils down to a fairly pedestrian NHL trade deadline. What’s to blame?Maybe all the early trading by the Maple Leafs and Blackhawks. Or it’s the salary cap. Or General Managers playing it safe these days. (It’s probably still the salary cap.) At least there’s still more activity then the NFL’s, right?

The General manger icons come from last season’s “Did They Play The Game” infographic on Grantland (RIP). The GM icons have been updated to show the five general managers with new teams Don Sweeny (Boston), Peter Chiarelli (Edmonton), Ray Shero (New Jersey), Jeff Gorton (New York Rangers), and Lou Lamoriello (Toronto). Eventually, I’ll update the GM infographic with this info. Just in time for more changes probably.
